Is it just me or do you think about chain reactions when reading the next few lines? What if you could insulation the 500v positive electrode, perhaps put it on outside of glass tube, perhaps using trapped electrostatic charge, like in wax?

Remove the dischrage damping gases. Throw a few pieces of legal uranium ore into the tube to continously trigger of new gas avalanches. Can this be a positive gain energy sourece?

The ionization is considerably amplified within the tube by the Townsend discharge effect to produce an easily measured detection pulse, which is fed to the processing and display electronics. This large pulse from the tube makes the Geiger counter relatively cheap to manufacture, as the subsequent electronics are greatly simplified.[2] The electronics also generate the high voltage, typically 400–900 volts, that has to be applied to the Geiger–Müller tube to enable its operation. To stop the discharge in the Geiger–Müller tube a little halogen gas or organic material (alcohol) is added to the gas mixture.<<

Of course we need to place a un externally charged Anode inside the gas tube for the completion of the external, work circuit. The Cathode would be bias referenced to the open circuit (Insulated) High voltage Anode but would not have a Current flow.
